Kenya: Kutuny Wants Three-Year Paid Internships for All College Graduates

The government will be compelled to provide three-year internships for all college graduates if a bill before parliament is passed into law. The private members bill by Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny seeks to amend the Industrial Training Act to have all diploma and degree graduates placed in internships.

Kutuny wants the government to get funds from donations and grants to sustain the programme through reasonable stipends paid to the interns. "Without prejudice to any provision of this Act, the government shall place on industrial attachment, with public institutions, newly graduated persons in all professions, having due regard to the areas of specialization by the persons concerned, where such persons are unable to employment immediately upon completion of their studies," the bill reads in part.
