Uganda: Brewer Injects U.S. $80,000 in League

Kampala — If one were to take a stroll around several bars in and around Kampala, they are bound to find patrons gathered around pool tables shooting at the balls with precision.

These people are often seen as idlers who have nothing to do but just shoot pool all day long.

A closer look will however reveal otherwise. Some of these patrons have gone ahead and formed pool clubs and are currently competing in the different tiers of the National Pool League.

This has attracted sponsors and the latest entrant, Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) through the Pilsner Lager brand.

The brewery has injected Ush200m into the National Pool league which funds will be used to cater for the logistical requirements of both the men's and ladies championship for the next two years.

Speaking at the handover ceremony Ms. Caroline Kalule, the brand manager underscored EABL's commitment to supporting sports in Uganda.

She said, "This sponsorship will make the league more competitive and attract more teams to participate and will ultimately grow the sport in all parts of the country."

Mr. Farouk Kisuze the Chairman of the Pool Association of Uganda said, "We expect the new clubs to feature with prominent performances in this year's National Pool League and more new entrants into the league next year."

At the end of every season, the association shall relegate the worst performing 4 teams in the Senior Pool League and promote the best four teams from Pool League One. This will enhance the cause for participation, motivate teams in all leagues to perform to their best and improve on competitiveness.
