Washington — The global tourism industry generates more than $1 trillion in revenue annually, and for many countries, tourism is vital to local economies. But beyond its economic benefits, tourism promotes cultural understanding for the 1 billion travelers who venture abroad annually.
"There is no better way to learn about a new culture than to experience it firsthand," said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a statement for World Tourism Day issued September 19. "Tourism promotes dialogue and interaction. Such contact between people of different backgrounds is the very foundation for tolerance."
