At independence in 1960, I was 12 years old and in 4th grade primary school. Oil was still being explored and though agriculture was of the peasant type, manual and fraught with endless drudgery, the economy was buoyant; education was free and included uniforms, text books, exercise books, and all utensils.
Even boarding and feeding for secondary school students was free and included 3 sets of school uniforms. Our parents paid a token and mission schools were grant-aided.
