West Africa: Algeria, U.S Discuss Sahel Security

Algerian Minister Delegate for Maghreb and African Affairs Abdelkader Messahel and the head of US Africa Command (AFRICOM) met in Algiers on Saturday (September 29th) to examine "the situation in the Sahel, especially the Mali crisis and the prospects for its resolution", APS quoted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying.

The meeting with General Carter F. Ham provided an opportunity for Messahel to explain Algeria's approach to the restoration of security and stability in Mali, based on "sustained co-operation in the fight against terrorism and organised crime between Sahel countries and their international partners", the foreign ministry statement said.

Before arriving in Algeria, the AFRICOM commander visited Nouakchott for security talks with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and Army chief of staff General Mohamed Ould Cheikh Mohamed Ahmed.
