Ethiopia: Ministry Stresses Need for Productivity of Livestock Sub-Sector

Addis Ababa — The Ministry of Agriculture said nation's low productivity of the livestock sub-sector and the rapidly growing population have made the per capita consumption of the sub-sector lower and not self-sufficient.

Opening the Ethiopian Society of Animal Production (ESAP) 20th annual conference being held at the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research with the theme: "Livestock at the Crossroads of Climate Change and Variability," Agriculture State Minister Wondirad Mandefro said that the livestock sub-sector accounts 30 per cent of the agricultural GDP, 20 per cent of the export earnings and accounts for 40 per cent of the average farm income in the mixed crop livestock system.
