East Africa: Regional Lawmakers Oppose Move to Trim Their Powers

Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) have criticised a proposal seeking to bar any individual member from initiating a motion or introducing any bill in the House.

The proposal was fronted during the 25th meeting of the Council of Ministers held in Bujumbura, in August, calling for the amendment of article 59 of the Treaty to remove the part that states that "subject to the rules of procedure of the assembly, any member may propose any motion or introduce any Bill in the assembly."
