Ghana: Central Region Records Highest Inflation Rate Again

Economic conditions in the Central Region of Ghana are worsening as a result of high cost of goods and services.

According to the year-on-year inflation figures released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) last Wednesday, the Region recorded the highest inflation rate of 11.3 per cent, way above the national average of 9.4 per cent. In July the Region again topped within 11.6 per cent.

Three other regions, Greater Accra, Ashanti and Northern follow in that order with inflation rates of 10.9 per cent, 9.9 per cent and 9.7 per cent respectively.

The regions that chalked inflation rates lower than the national average were Brong Ahafo (8.8 per cent), Western (8.6 per cent), Eastern (7.9 per cent), Volta (7.3 per cent) and Upper East and Upper West (6.6 per cent).

The GSS pegged the Consumer Price Index (CPI) at 9.4 per cent. The CPI measures changes over time in the general price level of goods and services that households acquire for the purpose of consumption, with reference to the price level in 2002, the base year, which has an index of 100.
