Sekondi — The Member of Parliament (MP) for Sekondi, Hon Papa Owusu-Ankomah has called on teachers to show more commitment to their work and abide by their professional ethics in order to improve upon academic standards in schools.
He also appealed to them to eschew tendencies that could bring the teaching profession into disrepute, and thus affect teaching and learning adversely.
He gave the advice at the Second Best Teacher Awards Ceremony in Sekondi recently to reward 22 hard working teachers, and students, who had excelled in this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).The teachers award scheme was instituted three years ago.
Hon Owusu-Ankomah urged parents to invest in the education of their children to enable them to acquire skills and knowledge needed for national development. He also asked them to co-operate with school authorities in the design and implementation of programmes to promote and enhance effective teaching and learning.
He reminded the parents that long-term investment in education expanded their frontiers with the potential of improving their economic wellbeing and general happiness.
The Sekondi MP donated GH 15,000 to 85 second cycle students in the constituency towards the Education Support Scheme.
Mr. Charles Kumordzie of Sekondi Old Hospital Junior High School (JHS) was adjudged the best teacher in the JHS category, while Ms. Sophia Ewusie-Wilson of Sekondi Wesley Methodist School was adjudged the best headteacher in the Primary School category.
Ms. Susana Afful was adjudged the best teacher in the Kindergarten category and Ms. Lina Yalley of Sekondi Presbyterian Primary, the best teacher in the Primary School category.
The award winners received Plasma TV, Motorbikes and Certificates.
