Ghana: Students Urged to Use Library to Expand Knowledge

Sekondi — The Western Regional Director of Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Augustus Nii Lamptey Cleland, has cautioned students against using their youthful exuberance to cause mischief. He said instead of engaging in such unfruitful acts, the youth should visit libraries to read to improve upon their vocabulary, acquire new knowledge and widen their horizons.

Mr Lamptey was speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony and the rehabilitation of an E-library project in Sekondi. He urged students to take advantage of the facility in order to access more information. The ultra-modern library is being sponsored by MTN Ghana at the cost of GHc340.127.97.

The Omanhene of Essikado Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, who was present at the function, also impressed upon students to read materials which were edifying and not just anything they came across.

He observed that the Western Region lacked adequate library facilities where references and researches could be done and therefore called on city planners to allocate spaces for the constructions of libraries for residents.

Nana Nketsia lauded MTN Ghana for investing in such ventures to improve the lives of the people and reiterated the call to the youth to take advantage of the library to expand their worldview.

Mr Joseph Boye, Western Regional Librarian, said when completed, the project would be a conducive place for learning and would contain about 500,000 books on all subjects, and computers with accessories.

Meanwhile, Mr Samuel Appiah, Regional Manager of MTN, said the project was part of its corporate social responsibility in education for the region.

He said MTN had constructed an ICT centre at Essiama, a classroom block at Ahantman Senior High School and provided some equipment for Shama Senior High School.
