The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has lauded the re-election of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko as Ondo State Governor, noting that the developmental strides recorded in his first term in office earned him the second term.
It also called on President Goodluck Jonathan to implement the Justice Mohammed Uwais Electoral Reform Committee's report in full enhance and strengthen democracy in Nigeria.
The NLC, in a statement titled: "Ondo Election, A Renewed Hope for Democracy" commended President Jonathan for demonstrating a commitment to free and fair electoral promises in Edo and Ondo States governorship elections, a move, it said gives Nigeria hope for good governance.
"The Independent National Electoral Commission has so far proven to Nigerians that under a patriotic and focused leadership, the commission can conduct a free and fair election. The Attahiru Jega leadership since assumption of office has demonstrated a high sense of responsibility, patriotism, sincerity and commitment to a credible electoral process and this is what we need as a nation for democracy and good governance to grow," the statement read.
The NLC also urged politicians to move away from violent and manipulative elections which are characterised by rigging and vote stuffing as those methods are no longer attractive.
As we move away from violent, manipulative elections; it is important our politicians also change their political methods. It should be clear now that rigging, vote stuffing, and manipulation is no longer 'attractive'.
