First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan said yesterday that what she went through during her medical sojourn in Germany was God's design for her life.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark her 55th birthday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, she expressed her gratitude to God for the gift of life as well as that of her immediate family and thanked Nigerians for praying for her while she was away.

The first lady said she was grateful that God kept her alive to mark her birthday.

Her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan, after presenting a gift to her, simply described her as a shining star in his life and thanked God for granting her good health.

The event was marked with thanksgiving prayers and presentation of gifts by family members as well as well wishers and friends.
