Liberia: CDC Seeks Probe Into 'Oil Wrangle'

The Congress for Democratic Change is calling for an independent investigation into ongoing allegations and counter-allegations between some members of the House of Representatives, Executive Branch of Government and several media outlets in the country.

CDC believes the growing disharmony between the two branches of government over alleged oil bloc allocations psychologically compromises the check-and-balance obligations of the lower House and the corresponding executing powers of the Executive Branch, while tainting the legitimacy of Liberia's emerging petroleum sector.

The party through a press statement issued in Monrovia Sunday night indicated that as it anticipates an independent inquest into these very grave allegations, all members of the House of Representatives accused must provide indispensable clarities consistent with the indictment.

Notwithstanding, the CDC thinks the 'burden of proof' doctrine of the Liberian Constitution also requires that the alleging parties establish authenticities of claims to diminish negative public perceptions that those involved in the allegation trade sole interest is to promoting personal vendettas.

In the same vein, the leadership of the Congress for Democratic Change upholds the opinion that the general benefits of the suffering population, and a garnered interest of all sectors of the Liberian economy, must remain the sole driving force, greasing the engines of the National Oil Company of Liberia.

The party has resolved to unrelentingly begin a continuous monitoring and activism taskforce in the oil and gas sector to ensure public interests remain overriding.

The party said the status of the oil Block 13 divestiture is paramount so all stakeholders should remain focused on its successful completion for the benefit of the people of Liberia, who are the true owners of the nation's future oil wealth.

The CDC reaffirmed the position of its Standard Bearer Ambassador George Weah, who recently stressed that the rights of Liberians to participate in these processes must be protected. It then called on NOCAL's management to remain truthful to its declared objectives of reform, and transparency.

The party underscored the need for smooth collaboration (check-and-balance) and dutiful relationship between both branches of government to keep public interest in the main stream of the governing process.

It called on the Executive and Legislative branches to instead prioritize prudent and urgent decisions to reduce poverty through unconditional increment of civil servants' salary, and the expeditious address of the plight of public school teachers.
