NAMIBIA’S first Olympic gold medalist Johanna Benson will be honoured by the #Aodaman Traditional Authority based at the north-western town of Khorixas next month.
Benson name will be added to the traditional authority’s monument plate at Fransfontein and a street will be named after her.
\#Aodaman Traditional Authority chief Petrus Ukongo said “Benson deserves big appreciation as she is a heroine”.
The #Aodaman Traditional Authority in conjunction with Khorixas Constituency Office invited Benson to Khorixas to unveil the monument at Fransfontein where her name will be added to other honorees.
“We want to thank Benson for the gold medal brought to Namibia, said chief Ukongo.
The #Aodaman chief said the Khorixas community will wait for the gold medalist at the Khorixas-Kamanjab-Uis-Outjo crossing and from there will drive down the Doctor Libertine Amadhila Street before going to #Aodaman Traditional office.
An event will be held at Herbert Conradie Stadium in Khorixas were members from community can give gifts to Benson. “I urge the community to bring goats and other gifts for Benson,” said chief Ukongo. Various cultural performances are also planned for the event.
Chief Ukongo told The Namibian that the Khorixas council was asked to name the street dividing #Aodaman Traditional Authority and Jabulani Store after Benson.
A committee was set up last week from Welwitchia Junior Secondary School and Cornelius Goreseb High School students to organise the arrival party for Benson.
The #Aodaman chief called on the community must not hide their disabled children and to bring them out in the open to do things.
“Look at Benson, her disability never hampered her to achieve a gold medal.”
Chief Ukongo said that the #Aodaman Traditional Authority will in the future start programmes aimed at disabled people.
Benson will be the first sport personality to be honour at the #Aodaman monument.
Jeffrey //Naobeb, the spokesperson of Benson confirmed that the ‘golden girl’ will be honoured but did not know the details of the programme yet. //Naobeb told The Namibian that Benson was happy to go to Khorixas.
