Photo: The Daily News DISGRACED Managing Director of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), engineer William Mhando has been formally dismissed from his post with effect from last Monday.
A statement issued on Wednesday by the power utility firm and signed by the Board Chairman, General (rtd) Robert Mboma, said the decision was reached based on a string of allegations including abuse of powers.
The statement further stated that the decision reached by the Board of Directors was also based on the report of the Controller and Auditor General (CAG). Following several allegations against him, the board had suspended Eng Mhando on July 16, this year, to pave way for free and fair investigations.
"Investigations by the CAG revealed that there were wanton violations of the firm's procedures and abuse of powers exercised by the Managing Director, Eng. William Mhando," read part of the statement.
According to the statement, apart from the report, the board had appointed a panel of three people to hear the defence by the MD on the allegations levelled against him by the CAG.
"After hearing his defence, the panel also found him guilty of violating the firm's procedures, including elements of conflict of interests," said the statement.
Despite all the measures, added the statement, the board met on Monday, October 29 and was satisfied that Eng Mhando committed the offences including entering into contracts which had conflict of interests contrary to the procedures of the company. The board, however, did not state the fate of other officers who were suspended along with Eng. Mhando.
Others who were suspended by the board include Tanesco's Deputy Managing Director, Mr Robert Shemhilu, Chief Finance Officer, Mr Lusekelo Kassanga and Senior Manager (Procurement), Mr Harun Mattambo. Efforts to get comments from Eng. Mhando proved futile as his mobile phone was not reachable.
