Zambia: 'Civil Servants Must Deliver'...govt Not Intimidating but Wants Efficient Service Delivery - Sakeni

GOVERNMENT says it is not intimidating civil servants but demanding efficient service delivery which will benefit the Zambian people.

Chief Government spokesperson, Kennedy Sakeni has said that it is wrong for people like Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president, Leonard Hikaumba to insinuate that some civil servants are failing to deliver due to intimidation from senior Government officials.

Mr Sakeni, who is Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, said yesterday that all that Government was interested in was efficient service delivery by civil servants for the benefit of the nation.

He said in an interview in Lusaka that the Government could not deliver sufficiently to the people unless it had a crop of hardworking and disciplined civil servants in place.

Mr Sakeni said the Patriotic Front (PF) Government would work to ensure that all civil servants delivered in accordance with its targets.

He said the Government was concerned and was in a hurry to see that civil servants improved their performance in service delivery, adding that demanding for this was not intimidation.

The minister said the said the Government had no quarrel with civil servants that met their targets and worked in tandem with the new Government's goals and objectives.

He said the Government wanted civil servants not to be partisan but work as real technocrats.

He urged civil servants to ignore Mr Hikaumba's statement and instead work in line with the guidelines and policies of the civil service.

"We have nothing against a civil servant who is working to the PF Government's expectations of good service delivery and all we want is for the civil servants to put in their best and perform above board.

"They should not be scared to perform their duties because they are protected by the law and nobody can intimidate them as long as they are disciplined, hardworking and are delivering," Mr Sakeni said.

He said politicians and the people of Zambia at large could only appreciate service delivery from civil servants through their hard work.

Mr Hikaumba was recently quoted as saying that civil servants in Zambia were failing to deliver because of intimidation from the the Government.
