United States Ambassador Deborah Malac has disclosed that US government provides an estimated US$200 million in assistance to Liberia each year.
Madam Malac told a recent news conference at the US Embassy that the yearly US$200 million assistance, which is administered by US Agency for International Development (USAID), Department of State, Peace Corps and other agencies, focuses on achieving progress in four fundamental areas including strengthening democracy and governance; enhancing peace and security, increasing economic growth, and improving the lives of people.
She said: "our programs are developed in partnership with the Liberian government, and implemented largely through non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and institutions, although we do provide some direct assistance to the government."
US Ambassador Malac noted that her government yearly estimated US$ 200 million to Liberia is helping to reduce poverty; improve educational opportunities, especially for girls; expand and improve health care; develop the agricultural sector; strengthen public financial management, and strengthen the security sector, including the military, the police and the Ministry of Justice.
"The United States has a unique, close relationship with Liberia throughout its history. This relationship will not change whatever the outcome of next week's presidential election. We in the United States take pride in our strong institutions and know they will remain strong whatever party or individual is in power," she assured Liberians.
Speaking further Madam Malac expressed joy over her new assignment as U.S. Ambassador to Liberia and disclosed that her first several weeks in country were eventful and productive.
She looks forward to getting out of Monrovia and into the interior of the country to meet as many Liberians as possible and to learn more about their hopes, aspirations and concerns.
Madam Malac also assured that her goal over the next three years is to strengthen further partnership between the United States and Liberia, and to build on the progress made in recent years to achieve a jointly held goal of a brighter and more prosperous future for all Liberians.
The news conference was Ambassador Malac first official interaction with journalists, since she took over from Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield as US new ambassador.
