Namibia: Teachers to Defy Court Order? Strike Enters Day Six

Windhoek — Striking teachers last Friday declared they will continue with their illegal strike after they failed to comply with an interdict issued by the High Court ordering them to immediately stop with the strike and return to their schools.

Striking teachers last Friday suffered a major legal setback when Judge Kato van Niekerk granted the government an interdict against their continuing demonstration in front of the Government Office Park. The judge delivered the verdict on an urgent application brought by government attorneys on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr Abraham Iyambo, against the collective body constituting the Interim Khomas Teachers Strategic Committee and all persons forming part of the collective body as the first respondent, the Namibia National Teachers Union (Nantu) as the second respondent and the Labour Commissioner as the third respondent.
