Egypt: Nation Calls for Placing Israel's Nuclear Facilities Under IAEA Safeguards

Egypt's delegation to the United Nations (UN) on Tuesday 6/11/2012 called for placing Israel's nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Egypt's statement before the UN General Assembly, read out by permanent delegate to the UN Moataz Ahmedin Khalil, criticized Israel's negligence of the UN resolutions, saying it is the only country in the region that practices vague nuclear activities away from any international supervision, which increases the threat of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.

Khalil underlined the importance of the Egyptian initiative on holding an international conference on making the Middle East an area free from weapons of mass destruction this year.
