East Africa: Cecafa Invites Malawi for Challenge Cup

The regional football body, Cecafa has officially invited Malawi as the only guest team to participate in this year's Cecafa Tusker Senior Challenge Cup scheduled for November 24 in Kampala, Uganda.

The Cecafa secretary general Nicholas Musonye told Times Sport yesterday on phone from Nairobi, "We have reached a decision of inviting Malawi as the only guest team to spice up the tournament."

Musonye also rubbished reports claiming that Burundi had withdrawn from the two-week long tournament. "Burundi will compete in the tournament. I don't know where people are getting information ruling them out of the championship," he explained.

The Flames have participated at Cecafa as guests for the past two years. Flames coach Kinnah Phiri wants to use Cecafa Cup tourney to keep the Flames busy as they prepare for the World Cup qualifiers second legs.

Malawi is in the same group with Nigeria, Namibia and Kenya. The Flames, who drew with Kenya and Nigeria, face Namibia in March before playing Kenya in June.

The draw for the 36th edition of the tournament will take place in Kampala on the November 8.
