Kenya: KNLS to Build 13 New Libraries

Kenya National Library Service intends to build 13 new public libraries. According to director of Richard Atuti 13 counties do not have libraries.

He said a new policy will define the type of library. "Libraries are under counties but the constitution does not state whether they are public libraries or not," Atuti said.

He was speaking during the national and public libraries' policy stakeholders forum yesterday. Atuti said the policy will define appropriate structures of a public library in the 47 counties and the mode of funding.

The policy proposes the review of the current Kenya National Library Service board as the umbrella body. It further seeks to have all legal published documents deposited at KNLS.

Copies of legal published documents like newspapers and books are usually deposited with the Registrar of Companies, the University of Nairobi and KNLS.
