Zambia: Five Die in Road Accident

FIVE people, four of them believed to be members of one family, have died in a road accident in Mumbwa.

Among the four family members was an eight-month-old baby who died when a truck they boarded hit a pedestrian and overturned.

The unidentified pedestrian died on the spot in the accident that occurred around 22:00 hours on Tuesday.

Outgoing Central Province police chief, Joyce Kasosa confirmed the accident in an interview in Kabwe yesterday.

The driver of the truck, Christopher Mulusu, 36, of Mumbwa District who was driving the truck, registration number ABP 3907, had since been arrested to assist with investigations.

The identities of the deceased were not immediately available but among them were a 17-year-old female, another aged 29, a four-year-old boy and the baby.

And a 68-year-old cyclist, Richard Cheenyu of Hamaundu Village in Chief Shakumbila's area, died after a hit-and-run accident.

The accident occurred around 20:30 hours.
