Tanzania: Port Authority Board Disbanded

THE Minister for Transport, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, has revoked appointments of members of the Board of Directors of Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) and has appointed eight new members to replace them. The revocation took effect on November 6 this year.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, members whose appointments have been revoked include Mr Dunstan Mrutu, Engineer George Alliy, Alhaj Mtutura A. Mtutura, Mr Emmanuel Mallya, Ms Mwantumu Malale and Ms Maria Kejo.The list, however, does not involve two other board members who passed away at times and causes.

According to the statement, the minister's action is in accordance with Section 6 (2) of the TPA Act and Provision 1(2)(i) of the First Schedule of the TPA Act of 2004 which gives him powers to make such decision.New Members of the Board of Directors include Dr Jabiri Kuwe Bakari, Mr John Ulanga, Ms Caroline Temu, Mr Jaffer Machano, Dr Hildebrand Shayo, Mr Said Sauko, Engineer Julius Mamiro and Ms Asha Nassor.

"The changes are part of the ministry's efforts to restore efficiency so that it can contribute more significantly to the country's economy and boost national revenue," read part of the statement.The minister has also directed the TPA Management to prepare and hand over all relevant documents to the new board members within ten days from now before he meets them to brainstorm on their new challenges.

The documents will also help the new members of the board to make adequate preparations before they sign performance contracts.Dr Mwakyembe suspended top executives of the TPA recently and appointed a probe team to investigate the performance of the Authority.He promised that he would work on all recommendations of the probe team by December this year.
