Kenya: Search On, for Kid in River

THE body of a standard four pupil at Isegere Toto School who drowned in River Malaba on Sunday is yet to be recovered. Daudi Yassin, 10, drowned on Sunday at 4pm while in the company of his friends who survived to tell the story.

The boy's uncle Yassin Ali said efforts to recover the body of his nephew from the raging river had proved futile owing to lack of divers. The proprietor of Yassin Supermarket appealed to the government to take urgent measures to construct a perimeter fence around the river to save lives of innocent children.

"Within one month three children have drowned near the same spot and with the bodies taking nearly two weeks before they are recovered," said Ali.

He said the combined efforts by DC Josephine Onunga, Red Cross, the police and jua kali divers had proved futile despite extending the search to Machakusi in Teso South.

Teso Deputy OCPD Francis Wahome said they had launched a massive search for the body, adding that their efforts are being hampered by the volume of the river.
