Nigeria: Facebook Lover May Face Attempted Murder Charges - Police

The police in Lagos say they are ready to prosecute a 26-year-old man who allegedly pushed down his facebook lover from a multi-storey building, following a disagreement over sex.

CSP Fayoade Adegoke, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bar Beach, Victoria Island, Lagos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that the young man (names withheld) might be charged with attempted murder.

The DPO, however, said that the parents of the suspect and the victim were engaged in reconciliatory talks over the matter.

NAN reports that 21-year-old Akabugu Nkiruka sustained multiple injuries, including a fractured pelvis, and is undergoing treatment at the General Hospital, Marina, Lagos, following the Nov. 1 incident.

Nkiruka, a linguistic student of the University of Lagos, had told NAN on her hospital bed that she went clubbing with the young man she met on facebook ( a social media) barely a week earlier, and ended up in his family home at 1004 Estate, Victoria Island, Lagos.

She noted that the young man had earlier talked about sex on phone prior to the outing but she told him she was menstruating.

Nkiruka said that on getting to the house, the man tore her dress and tried to rape her.

According to Nkiruka, the man thereafter pushed her down from the third floor of the building because of her refusal to have sex with him.

But the mother of the young man, who was at home on the night of the incident, told NAN that she was not aware of what happened.

She claimed she slept around 10 p.m., while the disagreement between the couple started much later.

She insisted that her preliminary inquiry indicated that Nkiruka was not pushed by her son as alleged, but that she jumped on her own in the ensuing scuffle.

The DPO said that the police were concerned with the health of the victim, and that further investigation was continuing into the matter.

NAN recalls that seven young men, including two who met her on facebook, are currently facing trial for the alleged rape and killing of 24-year-old Miss Cynthia Osokogu, in Lagos earlier this year.
