Nigeria: Flood - FG Urged to Dredge River Niger

Ughelli — THE people of Izon Okosu Otu, Delta State, have urged the Federal Government to take urgent steps towards dredging the River Niger as a way of guarding against a recurrence of flooding in the future.

The people, in a statement by Chief E. E. Ebimami and Mr. Frederick Anesah, appealed to all state governments administering flood victims' funds to be most discreet in managing them.

They said: "No light fingered public officer should be allowed to oversee the funds.

"We are particularly bothered about the post flood effects on the devastated areas. The challenges are immense. The environmental remediation work at homesteads, common grounds and even farmlands, will be terrible and require careful planning execution with its huge funding implication.

"We of Izon Okosu Otu think even that environmental remediation of the flood damage is just one aspect. The greater aspect is finding lasting solution to avoid recurrence of this environmental menace."
