What makes a career fulfilling, long and sustaining is an important aspect that has to be decided by the owner of the career path. Some will say rewards financial or other benefits, growth and lasting legacy, while some will say fulfillment and satisfaction and others will still say occupancy.
All these may be true to most people in the world but there are two main reasons that determine career decisions and path. The first thing is purpose that brings God meaning and secondly personal objectives that bring personal desires.
To the young people their career maybe determined by parents who want to live their dreams through their children and forget that their ambition are not their children's dreams or capabilities.
Some teenagers make important decisions like their career under peer pressure and other under the influence of drugs, alcohol and media information which may not be appropriate to this audience. Without proper knowledge of self and clear goals, careers do not give meaning and decision made in the state may not be comprehensive to give satisfaction and continuity.
Each person born of a woman has certain unique characteristics in the form of gifts, talents and strength that if applied in appropriate situations, crisis or circumstances can produce solutions. In the world's bestselling book, the Bible states that "A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men." -- Proverbs 18:16.
In Zimbabwe Macheso has managed to meet the president and travel around the world from singing and dancing as a profession, some through careers in diplomacy, some through swimming, some through security, some through achieving academic excellency and still some through stones and grass, how much more if the world be exposed to your gift!
From a purpose point of view, an understanding of the creator's use of an appliance or machine is essential to determine usage and purpose of that asset. The process of discovering what God has invested in you determines your career path.
Establishing a career path is achieved by the following process:
- Discover the person in you or what makes you unique from the next person
- Career exploration identification of were you are best situated
- Skills and role play that identify with your talents
Careers that are built on purpose do not exist because of purpose but from gifts and talent. If focus is on talent then the following questions have to be answered before any career move can be made. Who am I, what do I want to do and how do I get there? It is from this elevation that a proper and informed decision can be made on the best career move.

- Your beliefs
- Your decision making process
These are more to do with personal attributes of a person and cannot change unless there is life changing circumstances.
What do I want to do?
- Investigate the top careers you identify with
- Use career tests
- Think beyond career test since tests are based on past information
- Research what entails the career move
- Conduct your own PEST analysis on future job trends
- Read material from identified career like industry magazines
- Attend professional workshops, trade shows and exhibitions
- Visit company locations or websites
- Volunteer jobs
All these activities are there to test if who you are, can fit in what you can become. A broad and truthful analysis will give you the position and industries were your gift will be highly appreciated and can make a name for your potential at the best price. Resources and association are important in identifying your career at this stage.
How do I get there?
Getting started in a career plan would constitute the following:
- Long term career vision that is the highest point you intend to reach
- Clearly defined steps needed to accomplish the vision
- Organisation that gives you the best platform
- Identify a contingency plan to reach your goal
These questions act as a platform for every person to unleash their greatness in a dying world where as the generations have changed and the need or purpose to work in a certain career depends on the intrinsic values of career holder.
This generation wants to know what your organisation stands for in improving society, what it stands for in action as opposed to blowing smoke.

Careers can never be separated from purpose because whatever effort that you are going to exert to achieve certain goals will depend on values, character and talent. In the world over from official statistics more than 80 percent of the world working population is unsatisfied because of the meritocracy existent through choice of wrong career path which are not linked to personal purpose.
One of my all time favourite writer and preacher Myles Munroe states in his book that What God calls for he provides for. If God has given you a function he is faithful to create an atmosphere where your gift coupled with the right training will provide solutions to that crisis.
It takes one step at a time to complete a certain journey and purpose accelerates the attainment of career goals. A true career defines a certain purpose that God has ordained in a person and the type of lifestyle exhibit the gift a man carries.
