Dakar — African Editors Forum's chairman, Mr Chérif Moumina Sy, has declared Thursday in Dakar that Africa must think by itself so as to avoid a new form of colonization from economic superpowers such as China which invest for their own development.
"China is an imperialist power as France, the USA, their interest matters first. When they happen to invest in your country, it's because they know that there is something to gain in return".
Speaking on the theme which revolves on "Africa, an emerging continent, Mr. Sy said in the panel in which he has acted as speaker along with other experts at the occasion of the 5th edition of the African Media Leaders Forum, (AMLF) holding on two days.
He declared "For our own good, rhetoricians of African emergence should stop peppering us figures telling that there is political stability and that investors are welcome. It's not normal and I can't accept it as an African. It' s a sort of colonization."
"I really want Africa to emerge but I don't know what it former situation was. Presently, we can't deny that there are positive changes in various fields. There are clear changes in the economic or democratic field, should we hide the truth in Africa," he stressed.
M. Sy declared that "When I am told that there is growth and that the majority of people in Africa doesn't feed itself properly, I will imagine that there is a problem. Africa must start thinking deeply of building the continent. We must think by ourselves or invent by ourselves other democratic forms and elections which fit the reality of our societies."
"I don't think there might be any emergence or generalization of democracy as long as our populations are not educated and especially trained. As long as we will not train the maximum of our youths, enabling them to acquire the necessary knowledge to permit them to change their environment, we will not achieve development. It would come to burying our heads in the sand. I think that saying this doesn't mean being afro-pessimistic," he said.
"Africa can and change regardless of the others because our children don't hold the same ideas as us, because they live in globalization and they know they should either fight or die."
