Uganda: Former Erute MP, John Odit Dies

Mulago — John Odit, the former Secretary General of the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) is dead.

Odit, who was a former Member of Parliament for Erute County in Lira District and served in the 6th, 7th and 8th Parliament, died on Friday in Mulago hospital where he had been admitted after suffering a stroke in February.

Odit suffered a stroke early this year and was immediately admitted in Kampala International Hospital where he stayed for four months before being transferred to Mulago hospital, Kampala.

The fallen UPC strongman chaired the Commissions Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises committee which handled the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Temangalo land scandal that led to the resignation of funds managing director, David Chandia Jamwa..

He also chaired the Agriculture Committee in Parliament.

He is remembered for his role as secretary general for Uganda's oldest political party [UPC] under the current President, Olara Otunnu before falling out with him and was suspended from the party.
