Ethiopia: Town Undertakes Development Projects

Addis Ababa — Various projects and programmes are being implemented in Hawassa Town, SNNP State with over 700 million birr, the town finance and economic development department said.

Department deputy head, Ashare Uga told ENA Wednesday that the projects and programmes are in the areas of safe water provision, housing development, health, education and agriculture, among others.

Ashare said digging of six water wells, installation of water pumping machines and water pipelines, among others, will be carried out.

He also said activities will be undertaken to complete construction of 1890 condos launched earlier.

Efforts will be carried out to raise health service coverage in the town to 92 per cent from the present 70 per cent, he said, adding activities will be strengthened to ensure the quality of education.

The town administration will cover most of the budget for implementation of the projects and programmes, he said.

Similarly various development projects are being undertaken in Shire Endasilassie Town, Tigray State at a cost of 84 million birr, the town administration said.

Town Mayor, Fiseha Wubet told ENA that the projects include construction of bridges and cobblestone roads as well as installation of electric cables, among others.

According to him, the projects created jobs for over 6,000 citizens.

Various development projects undertaken over the previous year at a cost of 87.7 million birr have gone operational, he said.

A secondary school constructed in Angolela Tera Woreda of North Shoa Zone in Amhara State with 6.2 million birr has gone operational the woreda education office said. Office Head, Yirgalem Alene said the school is constructed in a rural locality, which has no access to similar facility. The head said the school has 16 classrooms, nine offices and a library, among others. The school has already enrolled over 160 students, Yirgalem said.

School Director, Sisay Wolde Amanuel on his part said a humaitarian organization called Menschen fur Menschen allocated the budget for construction of the school and to fulfill the necessary educational materials.

The construction of various infrastructure facilities is underway in Dilla Town of SNNP State at a cost of more than 81 million birr, the town administration said.

Town infrastructure facilities coordinator Dejene Alemu told ENA that the facilities include construction of 17-kms cobblestone, market centre and solid waste disposal as well as installation of street lamps.

He said the construction has created 4,000 jobs.
