Ethiopia: Focusing On Problem-Solving Researches

editorial

Ministry of Education said that problem-solving researches are of significantly importance in facilitating technology transfer. Needless to mention, researches have to be backed by problem- solving skills and translated into practical actions to make the end users benefited much out of the findings. There are a few specific skills that may be necessary for one type of problem that are not required to solve another; however, the strengths and weaknesses of a particular area might be the same, regardless of the environment. Most researches are complicated with the need for specific content knowledge to solve a particular problem and many researchers focus on the end result rather than looking at the specific skills used by the solver during the problem-solving process.

As problem-solving is an integral part of any physical science course, researches designed in line with this trend would absolutely be of crucial schemes in fostering technology transfer. The reason for such initiative is the fact that problem-solving is a higher order cognitive skill that is important in achieving a scientifically literate society.

There may well be several appropriate starting points for developing a range of problem-solving researches. Solving a problem by starting with the various appropriate concepts is valuable to the development of problem-solving and thinking skills as well as to the enhancement of understanding of the concepts employed and their interaction.

Solving a problem using various solution paths provides a means of exploring the problem. This process leads to understanding the problem and the ideas that support its solution.

In the era when the country has predominantly focused on science and technology, it is really high time to give due attention to problem-solving approach. Although problem-solving has long been widely assumed to be an important part of the transfer of knowledge, many countries have not yet been benefited much out of its findings. This is because sound problem-solving principles are not widely available. In our everyday and professional lives, the primary intellectual activity in which we engage is problem-solving as Karl Popper once stated "All life is problem-solving."

Researchers have claimed that the steps that are required to solve most problems are basically the same and follow the following steps: figuring out what kind of problem we are solving, generating alternative solutions, evaluating those solutions to find the best one, implementing the solution, and evaluating how successful the solution was in solving the problem.

Women and decision making

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) said that it is exerting utmost efforts to help women candidates and election coordinators build their capacity. And one of its key activities is drawing experiences from the past elections. This remark is made during a press conference organized to unveil a time schedule for the upcoming local and Addis Ababa City Council elections.

Since women are the primary caregivers for children, participating them in all spheres of activities like social, economic, political or whatever would guarantee the sustainability of a given country's growth and development. Their participation also help transform a nation to a greater level. Indisputably, women can do everything that men do, provided that they are given the appropriate opportunity to do so. In many democratic countries including ours, participating women is not a mere privilege. It is rather constitutionally protected right of women. Therefore, it is mandatory to involving them in every decision making areas. Likewise, building their capacity to make them hold public offices is not separately seen from realizing their constitutional rights. In fact, a great many of women are now exercising their rights as the government has attached due emphasis to women involvement in every decision makings.

These efforts are, therefore, needed to be further strengthened and a lot more women should come to a leadership positions. Needless to state, women are the great players in building a well stabilized society. The cooperation of all stakes to make them use their knowledge and natural talents is of great importance. To this end, the efforts which are undertaken by NEBE would help more women to come to the leadership position and serve their society.
