Nigeria: The Beautiful Royalties of American University of Nigeria

Yola — Students of the American University of Nigeria are not lagging behind in the world of entertainment as the second search for Mr. and Miss AUN proved.

The homecoming event which was intended to celebrate the alumni of the institution by creating various platforms for the students and alumni to interact also ushered in an aspect of entertainment to light up the celebration mode.

The Mr. and Miss AUN pageant was something the whole students and alumni looked forward to.

The contestants for Mr. AUN were Chidi Ahanonu, Oluwaseyi Awoniyi, David Maduka and Moses Obasi while the contestants for Miss AUN were Orinami Kure, Uduakabsi Jacob, Claire Maduka and Yasmin Ahmed.

Appearances by the contestants attracted lots of applauses and screamings from the audiences as the hall was filled with lots of students of the institution, Alumni members, Lecturers and visitors.

Director, Student Involvement and Activity, Dorsey Spencer said the institution tries as much as possible to organize entertainment events to keep the students in the campus and prevent them from going out of the campus to attend parties or shows. This is to prevent the students from being victims of any possible crimes in Yola town.

The contestants came out in various traditional attires and traditional dances showcasing their various contentures. They also trilled the audiences by introducing themselves in their dialects and the audience responded in the dialects they understood.

The students also proved to the audience that they had lots of talented people amongst them. As one of the students said, "We can still have fun without inviting any professional artiste to come and perform in our school."

Various students performed at the show. Some mimed songs from various musicians while some sang their own songs. There were break dances from individuals and groups.

The contestants also had a choreography performance where they displayed the popular Azonto and Etigi dance. Colour blogging appearance by the contestants seemed to be a unique style which was introduced recently. It had to do with them wearing different colours.

The pageant contestants were challenged to exhibit some of the talents they have.

Orinami Kure and Uduakabasi Jacob mimed songs from a foreign female artiste while Chidi Ahanonu, Moses Obasi and David Maduka displayed their talents by dancing the popular Azonto and Etigi dance.

Oluwaseyi Awoniyi aka Sesmo, who is a popular performer in the institution, had a Rap performance while Claire Maduka recited a poem. Yasmin Ahmed had a break dance performance.

The second day, apparently the last day of the event, was the AUN homecoming concert. It was more of performance from the students. Most of the students who seemed to go deeper into the entertainment industry especially music had the opportunity to present some of their personal works.

Oluwaseyi Awoniyi aka Sesmo one of the contestants almost stole the show as he appeared on the stage for different performances. He had his solo performance and was featured by some other performers. There was Sydney Peter aka Lil Sid as well.

According to Sesmo, "If I have a big job opportunity and a very big music contract that would give me fame and money, I would go for the music deal."

The result of the Mr. and Miss AUN contest was announced at the concert show. From the ovation and applauses that greeted Oluwaseyi every time he came on stage during the contest there was the impression that he would win. During the contest, twitter messages were read out to the audiences and they were more of shout outs to him.

Most people were taken by surprise when the results were announced and Chidi Ahanonu was crowned Mr. AUN.

Chidi was also surprised at the result when he said, "I didn't really expect to win because I had a serious competitor, Oluwaseyi. The only time I had some hope was when I displayed my talent by dancing and I started getting comments from people." He made it clear that "I gave my best and still doubted victory but at the end of the day it came out well."

On Sesmo's part, winner of Mr. Congeniality, "I guess the judges gave the prize to who they felt was supposed to win and they gave me what they felt I deserved."

Uduakabasi Jacob was crowned Miss Talent while Mr. Moses Obasi won the Mr. Talent. Yasmin won the Miss Congeniality crown which she said she prefered because "it also came with a crown."

Claire Maduka won the Miss AUN as she disclosed that I worked hard to win it so I am happy I did."

Mr. AUN said his objective in his new office would be "to help the Yola community. I want them to know that their dream of being what they want to be is not over so I would really have to engage in community service to help them."

On her part, Miss AUN "intends to start up a foundation outside the school to help orphans in the Yola community."

A Lagos based musician, Lynx closed the show when students rushed to the front of the stage to watch him perform most of the songs he had released.
