PADDY Murphy won the Old Mutual Mariental Triathlon for the third year in a row, while Charmaine Shannon won the women’s title for the second consecutive year at the 25th anniversary of the event on Saturday.
It was Murphy’s fourth victory in total at the Mariental Triathlon after he also won the event in 2008, while it was Shannon’s third victory after her first win in 2006.
Competing in the Masters category, Murphy underlined his dominance of the local triathlon scene after finishing more than two minutes ahead of Jean Paul Burger.
Burger, who was competing in the junior men’s category, was first out of the water but Murphy took the lead with a great ride on the cycling leg. At the transition point to the running leg, his lead had increased to more than four minutes, and although Burger managed to cut the deficit on the running leg, Murphy was a comfortable winner in an overall time of 2 hours 17 minutes 51 seconds.
Burger came second in 2:19:57, while Hans du Toit came third in 2:20:14.
Murphy won the Masters men’s category, Burger won the Junior men’s category and Du Toit won the Veteran men’s category.
Danie Joubert won the Senior men’s category in a time of 2:41:28.
Shannon was a comfortable winner of the overall women’s title, finishing more than four minutes ahead of the second placed Adele de la Rey. Shannon won the title in a time of 2:41:40, followed by De la Rey (2:46:18) and the Masters triathlete Elke Jagau (2:48:08).
Shannon won the Senior women’s category, and Jagau the Masters women’s category, while Antjie Tietz won the Veteran women’s category in a time of 2:49:40.
The team event was won by ‘Winging’ consisting of Marike van Wyk, Leon Swartz and Ryan Skinner in a time of 2:24:58.
‘Girl Power’, consisting of Enya Munting, Hayley Brand and Karen Munting came second in 2:36:43, while ‘Namibia Hose’ consisting of Lamaine le Roux, Ulandi Viljoen and Francois Fuscher came third in 2:43:06.
Herbert Peters won the Beginners Triathlon in 68:08, followed by Peter Brinkmann (74:19) and Luke Munting (74:49).
A total of 121 adults and 65 children competed in the Old Mutual Mariental Triathlon.
