The launch of the much publicized anti-gay marriage campaign by two largest religious communities in Liberia, Christian and Muslim, was apparently downplayed by the government of Liberia.
Reasons for the government's absent were not disclosed by organizers of the program.
The program, organized by The New Citizens Movement in collaboration with the Christian and Muslim communities in Liberia, took place Saturday and ended in the Borough of New Kru Town.
According to our reporter who attended the program, no government official was seen when the government was called to make remark.
Our reporter said even though the government was officially invited to attend the program, the anti-gay campaigners were shocked and embarrassed over the absence of the government.
Besides the government's absence, our reporter further observed that the lead crafter of the bill against same sex marriage Representative Clarence Massaquoi also failed to attend or any member of the House of Representatives.
The anti-same sex law which has been passed by the Liberian Senate is currently before the House of Representatives for concurrence.
Serving as the Chief Launcher of the campaign, the President of the Inter-Religious Council of Liberia, Sheihk Kafumba Konneh called on policymakers to consider the issue of same-sex marriage as forbidden to the faith and tradition of Liberia.
Sheihk Konneh said "in as much as the Liberian religious community welcomes the international conventions and treaties as well as our own tradition for the promotion and protection of the rights of human person, we recognize, respect and honor as the creation of God and Allah, we must appreciate that human creation and placement on earth were specific and not an aimless and endless."
He noted that as religiosity matches in accordance with the cadence of morality, it is therefore important that no country must profess to be moral through its foundation and at the same time be immoral.
"According to to our respective holy scriptures, particularly the Bible and the Al-Qur'an, the practice of same sex marriage is immoral and should therefore be denounced by all," the Inter-Religious President urged.
The Muslim Cleric has called on the National Legislature, especially the House of Representatives to speedily concur with the Senate to make the issue of same sex marriage a criminal offense.

Liberia has more to be concerned with in terms of development and improving the country's stature worldwide. Considering country's past poor human rights record during the civil war, I don't see how discrimination against any part of that society will repair the brutal image of civil rights abuse; mayhem and carnage that characterized the war. Liberia needs to focus on development. Our infrastructure and service sectors are lagging behind many other African countries because we spent 14 years hating and killing each other. Can we focus on something positive for once? As far as the religious organization's position is concerned this within definitely for religious institutions to have opinion either way on the debate but there should be clear divide between the role and view of the Church visa vie the role of the State. The president clearly stated that she will not support legalizing gay rights which was condemned by the Western media) but also that she will not sign any law that criminalizes gay rights. Apparently, the president wants to concentrate on matters that impact the lives of a much larger portion of the Liberian population than maybe 10-50 persons who are obviously in need of God's redemptive intervention. So it is interesting that the promoters will expect the government to send a representative not to promote tolerance which appears to be the State's position but hatred and marginalization. Also this whole talk about gay people being non-African is like not wanting to accept reality because South Africa is the only country in the world which has a law enshrined in its constitution giving full rights to the gay people. The last time I checked South Africa is part of the African continent and primarily ruled by a black majority. Malawi has also recently just suspended its anti-gay laws which was on the maintream Western media.
Samba. you want the governement to concentrate on development. It is a very good thing to do.But, the society of a nation has its roots in the Family which is the Pillar of the Nation. Now, it seems to be you have forgotten to notice the importance Family plays in any Nation and that is the reason you think the process of development should be concentrated on while we forgo the Values that have always been the Reason for A Family.
The issue of Gay and Lesbianism as being imposed on our useless African Leaders in the guise of Human Rights is very shameful and some of us are even getting to think on our own African means of Ruling out this Filt Lifestyle.
Please be reminded that Liberia is neither South Africa nor Malawi. And what you do not know is the issue of same-sex as being practice in South Africa it was not agreed upon by most South African and there wasn't any kind of Referendum to acceptance of this practice, and majority are wanting the legislation to be revisited.
Therefore, you should stop your uncheck advocacy for this attack on our traditional way of Life for the Male and Female Union and not the DIRTY WAY you people want us to turn. You are alive because of this System which was kept in practice in Liberia and most of the World and not because the Dirt you are supporting.
With respect what "rights" lesbians are asking? LGBT are not what they were born, it is what they have adopted to become. Unlike us if i am born male then i am male or born girl then i am girl. To my opinion LGBT is just a thinking or belief. i would respect them to have their own belief and no one should offend it. But when it comes to marriage rights or legislation.......i have reservations just because their marriage is NOT a true marriage but a partnership. they cant bring offspring, then why bother to have such legislation? however they can still enjoy all other civil rights in our society which are enjoyed by other non-LGBT.. Asking or forcing others to recognize them and give them rights is strange attitude. why do others have to recognize or endorse you? However give them rights is NOT a big problem, i openly agree that LGBT should have same rights like us, however we must make a balance in the society, we could not give them rights which will override our rights.
