Tanzania: Manatseh Wins Waitara Trophy

HOST team's Sodson Manatseh turned in another impressive performance to win the second edition of Johnnie Walker Waitara Trophy golf tournament held at the Tanzania People's Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo course in Dar es Salaam over the weekend.

Manatseh emerged the overall winner after he posted good score of 4-under par 68 net in the thrilling climax to the tourney meant to honour the founder of the TPDF Lugalo Golf club, Retired General George Waitara.

The day-long 18 holes event brought together more than 100 in and outside the country including Lieutenant General Ivan Koleta and Major General Berom Biraaro from Uganda and Colonel Maange and Colonel Keemba, both from Zambia. Dar es Salaam Gymkhana ace Michael Makala returned level par 72 to win the A Division category on countback that sow Aidan Nziku settled second at the group.

The B Division prize went to Martin Ombura with one-under par net 71, while retired General George Waitara posted level par 72 to finish second. Angel Eaton won the female category with 75 net as Vicky Elias scored 76 to take second position. Division C prize was won by Noel Mheni who carded 72; Patrick Waweru with his 73 came second, while Victor Joseph topped the junior event with 74.

The Pigamingi prize went to Nicholas Siwingwa following his worst score of 123 net. Angel and Manastsen also grabbed the ladies and men's longest drives prizes. In his post tournament remarks, Lugalo Golf club Chairman Ernest Galinoma said the idea to invite golfers from outside came from Chief of Defence Forces General Davis Mwamunyange.

The Chairman thanked the event sponsors, Serengeti Breweries Limited, through its John Walker brand, Precision Air and Pepsi. On his side, Waitara commended players from outside who showed up to honour the event. Five Tanzania based clubs including TPC Moshi, Gymkhana Arusha, Morogoro, Dar es Salaam and hosts Lugalo participated in the event.
