Somalia: Puntland MPs Amend Electoral Law

Garowe — Members of Puntland State Parliament amended the Puntland Electoral Law, in Garowe capital of Puntland state on Monday, Garowe Online reports.

Speaker of Parliament Abdirashid Mohamed Hersi convened the parliamentary meeting in Garowe on Monday.

The MPs changed three laws in the Puntland electoral law lowering the amount of

votes in every region to 300 from 500 votes.

The previous legislation made it mandatory for every political party to have 500 votes in every region. The new law 43 MPs passed states that the political

association must have offices in all 8 regions of Puntland.

The Puntland government will facilitate voting polls in districts across Puntland and a local council in where possible.

Three main political associations who win most of the votes in the 8 regions will compete in the next elections set for Jan 2014.

The democratization process is ongoing and some Puntland citizens have began their political campaigns to form associations.
