The Syokimau Commuter Railway station on Mombasa Road is set to be opened on Tuesday morning by President Mwai Kibaki.

The opening of the station will mark another milestone in efforts to realise various projects envisaged under the Vision 2030 Economic Blueprint.

The new station will have a train that ferries passengers from Syokimau to the city centre cutting travel time by half.

Rift Valley Railways is however yet to set the fare to be charged.

The contractor, El Noor General Contractor Ltd handed over the Sh400 million station to the Kenya Railway Corporation earlier this week, and it will be officially open to the public.

The station, which will serve thousands of commuters from Mlolongo, Athi River, Kitengela, Kajiado, Machakos and Syokimau Estate travelling into Nairobi daily, comes with a modern passenger ticketing system, surveillance cameras, shopping malls and ample vehicle facilities.

Opening of the station marks the completion of the first phase of the Sh24b Nairobi Commuter Rail Network that is geared at easing traffic congestion in Nairobi, blamed for huge economic losses.

After the completion of the Syokimau Station, focus will be put on building other nine modern stations including those on Jogoo Road, Imara Daima and Makadara Estate.

The Nairobi Commuter Rail Improvement project is under a Joint Development Agreement signed by KRC and InfraCo Limited in 2009 and approved by the Government of Kenya in 2011.
