Gor Mahia striker placed among the favourites for the Footballer of the Year award
Gor Mahia's Uganda striker Dan Sserunkuma is the favourite to land this years Footballer of the Year award after the nominees were made public yesterday.
Sserunkuma was named alongside his strike partner Rama Salim and AFC Leopards veteran goal getter Mike Barasa, KCB hitman Paul Mungai Kiongera and Oserian striker John Keo a surprise inclusion in the group
The diminutive Uganda forward however remains the odds on favourite to clinch the award after scoring 17 goals, one less than the leading scorer John Baraza and also leading Gor to second place in the KPL title race
The midfielder of the year category will have the stiffest competition with Peter Opiyo a slight favorite after helping Tusker retain their league title and Gor's Teddy Akumu and Kiongera providing tough competition alongside
Kiongera ahs been KCB's savior scoring eleven goals for them including a hattrcik against Rangers in the leageu as well as making a name for himself in the national under 23 team.
The coach of the year award will provide the most interesting contest with championship winning coach Robert Matano included in the group ostensibly for leading the brewers to defend their title despite only taking charge of them in seven matches while Zdravko Logarusic who lost once in more than 20 matches as hsi team finished second is also nominated.
The dark horse for the award is obviously Mathare United's young Stanley OKumbi coach who has been credited with reviving the dwindling fortunes of the 2008 champions and taking them from the brink of relagation into the top eight Former Mathare United winner Kevin Kimani is the reigning footballer of the year 2011.
