Tanzania: Embezzlement of Funds Irks Biharamulo Councillors

Bukoba — COUNCILLORS in Biharamulo District have raised concern over misappropriation of taxpayers' funds due to lack of internal auditors and have asked for government intervention.

Lusahunga Ward Councillor, Amon Mizengo said a big portion of government revenue was being embezzled by unfaithful workers including village and ward executive officers (WEOs), due to lack of internal auditors.

The same concern was raised by Nyakahura Ward Councillor, Apolinary Mugalula, who is also Chairman of the Biharamulo District Council. He said some of the VEOs and WEOs were using the loophole to steal money from wananchi by issuing forged receipts.

Biharamulo District Executive Director (DED), Nassib Mmbaga, said he had already appointed one among senior officers to act in the capacity of internal auditor. Further reports from Biharamulo District also said several village chairmen were doing work which should be done by village executive officers (VEOs).

According to Mr Mmbaga, the council was facing a critical shortage of VEOs and was waiting for approval from the government to employ VEOs to fill vacant posts. He did not, however, reveal the number of vacant posts.
