Cape Town — Cape Town is the best city in the world, according to a United Kingdom poll.

About 17,000 readers of British newspaper The Telegraph not only thought it was the best city in the world, but ranked South Africa the third best country, after New Zealand and the Maldives.

The poll results were released on The Telegraph's website. It was conducted earlier in the year as part of the annual Telegraph Travel Awards. Readers were asked about their favourite travel companies, destinations, hotels, and websites.

Cape Town was ranked above Vancouver in Canada and New York in the United States.

"The UK market has an on-going love affair with Cape Town," the city's Tourism CEO Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold said in a statement.

"British Airways confirm that Cape Town is one of their top 10 global routes... The loyal UK market has high spending capacity and still holds much potential for us to nurture and cater to."
