Rwanda: Man Held Over Rwf26 Million Forged Cheque

Police is holding a suspect, names withheld, in a botched financial fraud involving a forged cheque.

The suspect was arrested at Fina Bank as he cashed in a cheque worth Rwf 26 million in the names of INATEK, a varsity based in Ngoma district.

The suspect had alleged that he received the cheque from Dominique Karekezi, the INATEK Rector which the latter denied.

"When the suspect presented the cheque, the cashier crosschecked with university authorities who denied issuing the cheque...police was called in and we made the arrest," Chief Inspector of Police Marcel Higiro told The New Times yesterday.

He said other suspects in the failed scam are still at large.

"If banks are vigilant this kind of fraud cannot succeed..," the police office added.
