Nigeria: Merseyside Rivals Unites At First Bank Golf Championship

For good or for ill, fans of Everton Football Club and Liverpool Football Club, the two football clubs that compete in the Merseyside derby don't get along, but thanks to First Bank, the sponsor of Lagos Amateur Golf Championship.

Ian Keenan, a diehard Everton fan, and Lee Corcoran, a diehard Liverpool fan, will walk and work together from today till Sunday as they have been engaged by First Bank to conduct clinics for all class of golfers at the 51 First Bank Open Championship, one of the oldest golf championships in West Africa.

Everton and Liverpool football clubs are the two most successful clubs from the city of Liverpool in England. The derby is the longest currently running top-flight derby in England, having been played at that level every season since 1962-63.

Keenan the Everton supporter is a 36-year-old professional golfer based in Hoylake, Wirral UK. Since he turned pro in 1995, he has won many titles including the 2010 Castle Dargan, Irish Masters (PGA Euro Pro Tour).

Keenan has also competed in professional tournaments in over 25 countries around the world and currently plays on the PGA Europro Tour.

Keenan achieved one of his life's goals by playing in the 141st Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes in July 2012. He played in his first major event after narrowly missing out on a place at this year's US Open.

Keenan has also been involved in corporate side of the game both for his sponsors and on a consultancy basis. In recent years, he has been involved in long term sponsorship arrangements with the following companies: De Vere Hotels, Andrew Collinge Hair & Beauty, Chartergate ,Smith Young Partnership, Denton Associates, Coulter Hurst & Co and in 2010, Keenan welcomed Xerox Europe to his list of sponsors for the upcoming season.

Corcoran, the Liverpool FC supporter, turned professional in 1996 aged 21 after a successful amateur career playing for Cheshire County at all levels. Corcoran then became a fully qualified PGA professional aged 24 and graduated at The Belfry.

Following his graduation, he then focused on obtaining his European Tour Card whilst playing on both local and national mini tours. He also competed on the European Challenge Tour through 1999 and 2000.

Corcoran is currently playing in North Region PGA Events and Pro Ams. On the coaching aspect, he is the Head Coach at Foregolf where he concentrates on coaching all levels of players from fellow professionals to grassroots beginners.

Corcoran has a wealth of experience and is well known all over the NorthWest England as a top Coach and Player.
