South Africa: Police Say Business As Usual At or Tambo Airport

Pretoria — The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has assured travellers at the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) that the temporary closure of the police office at the airport will not affect operations and law enforcement will not be compromised.

"There was a communication breakdown that led to a misunderstanding, which saw the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) offices at the airport being closed on Friday, November 16.

"ORTIA is a national key point and a valuable entry point to the country, so we as a municipality and ACSA are working speedily to ensure that the situation is normalised as a matter of urgency," said mayoral spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, adding that "law enforcement services remain uninterrupted and it is business as usual".

Dlamini said the EMPD would continue giving support to airport security operations while the issue surrounding the closure of the airport precinct is finalised.
