Ethiopia: Bureau Said Determined to Enhance Quality Education Efforts

Addis Ababa — The Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau said yesterday that building education development army, replicating best practices, ensuring good governance as well as public participation, among others,will be part of its core activities this academic year.

Addressing City Teachers Association Council Conference called to assess first quarter performance and setting plan for this academic year, Bureau Head Dilamo Otore said that his office has been aggressively working to ensure education quality and equity as well. The bureau will focus on implementing the six quality education packages in accordance with standards set to applied down to grassroots level,the head said. He added that special emphasis will be given to science and mathematics subjects with regard to improving students performance. Fulfilling educational materials will be the bureau's major activities this academic year.

Dilamo added that ensuring quality education,the bureau highly focuses on building teachers capacity offering short- and long-term trainings. Currently, over 6,000 teachers are pursuing undergraduate studies.

Council President Legesse Haile on his part also said that the conference will discuss association's first quarter performance,the 2005 E.C plan, association's revised rules and regulations for endorsement.

The conference would also discuss the new teachers code of conduct and approve it. About 16, 002 teachers are engaged in the teaching -learning process in schools under the direct supervision of the bureau.
