The Mopani District Municipality in Limpopo needs an urgent solution to its water crisis. Since this has been a problem for over four months, the lack of action on this issue is disgraceful.

IFP Spokesperson on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Peter Smith said "The current situation in Giyani is terrible as the crisis has created water related problems. Hospitals such as the Nkhensani Hospital are in dire straits, with patients dependent on their families to bring them water. Water tanks and tankers need to be provided by the municipality urgently to this area"

Some people affected by the water crisis in Limpopo have gone to extremes to express their grievances to the municipality.

"A number of women from Petanenge, about 20 kilometres from Tzaneen, stripped off their clothes and picketed outside the Greater Tzaneen municipal buildings, highlighting the water crisis in the Mopani district.

With so many communities affected by the lack of water, the provincial government needs to step up efforts to provide a permanent solution to this crisis" said Smith.

As this matter is urgent, the IFP calls on the provincial government to provide water tanks as a temporary solution for these communities, while working out a long term strategy.
