Nigeria: Police Nab Prison Officer, Three Others for Armed Robbery

The Newly created Anti-Robbery Squad of the Zone 10 Police Headquarters in Sokoto has nabbed a Prison officer and three others for armed robbery and car snatching.

Created by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Muhammadu Jinjiri Abubakar to fight crime within Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara police Commands, the Squad has in its nest, suspected armed robbery gang who specialize in snatching vehicles of citizens at gun point.

According to a statement by Deputy Zonal Public Relations Officer, DSP, Lawal Abdullahi, "The gang which is being aided and abetted by a serving member of the Nigeria Prison Service, one Yunusa Haruna, 30, attached to Argungu Prison Headquarters in Kebbi State, met their Waterloo on the 10th day of October, 2012, following an intense surveillance based on a tip-off by good members of the society.

Investigation into the case by the Zonal Anti-Robbery Squad led to the flushing out and apprehension of the remaining gang members namely: Saiba Aliyu , 30, Musa Salihu Kamba,50, and Musa Sulaiman,39, all of Sokoto metropolis, as parties connected with the heinous crimes of armed robbery and car snatching within Sokoto State and its environs," the statement continued.

It added that four suspected stolen/robbed serviceable vehicles were recovered at different places in Sokoto State. "The vehicles recovered include; two Toyota Corolla and one Honda Civic disguised with purported stickers of M.K Motor, while a Honda 'End of Discussion' which was reported to have been snatched at gun point in Wuse II, Abuja, was equally recovered from the miscreants."

Description and particulars of the recovered vehicles are: Honda Civic (Green color) with engine and chassis nos D15B2-692111 and JHMET 865005223481; Toyota Corolla (Red color) with engine and chassis nos 3ESHU16-06AA1321 and JT154EEA100122293; Toyota Corolla (red colour) with engine and chassis nos 925 yp16-0140150 and JT 152EEA100024848; Honda (End of Discussion) with Reg. No AR 526 KJA. All the arrested suspects now in the police custody for thorough investigation, had made confessional statements to the Police mentioning the degree of their involvements.

The AIG expressed delight with the performances of Zonal Anti-Robbery Squad, and vowed to adopt carrot and stick method of motivation to boost the morale of officers and men working under Zone 10 Command. While calling on members of the public whose vehicles were robbed or stolen to come forward with genuine documents for identification and subsequent collection on bond, accordingly, he added, "The Nigeria Police is ready and committed to reward any officer who performs gallantly in the discharge of his constitutional duties."

The arrested suspect after full scale investigations, according to the statement, will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction for prosecution.
