Namibia: Swapo Wins Tsumkwe By-Election

Windhoek — The Swapo-Party’s Francina Hishekwa-Ghauz won Friday’s Tsumkwe Constituency by-election with 1 515 votes.

Elections director Moses Ndjarakana told Nampa on Saturday that the National Union Democratic Organisation (Nudo) candidate, Alex Kandetu, was second with 1 036 votes, while the DTA of Namibia’s Samuel Rihihamisa Maharero received 379 votes.

All People’s Party candidate Richard Nani Kgao garnered 186 votes, followed by Ismael Gomeb of the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) with 167 votes.

About 6 735 people registered to vote, but only 49,55 voted on Friday, said Ndjarakana.

The Tsumkwe by-election was necessitated by the death of Swapo regional councillor Moses Kgao !Coma in August.

Tsumkwe is situated more than 270 kilometres east of Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa Region and has about 8 000 residents.
