Luanda — Fighting crime and illegal immigration, as well as focusing on the humanisation of the prison system and creating an appropriate assistance in terms of civil protection are the main challenges to be faced by the Ministry of the Interior in coming times, incumbent minister, Ângelo de Barros Veiga Tavares, said Monday in Luanda.
The minister was speaking at the opening of the Broad Consultative Council of the Interior Ministry.
According to the minister, the objectives will only be achieved with the effort of all, so the institution will soon submit to the executive the concrete proposals for the creation of mechanisms that enable the involvement and participation of the communities in the security work.
The minister went on saying that the authorities will strengthen the capacity of the National Police, through empowerment programmes mainly designed for staffs of the Criminal Investigation Police Department and border police, with special attention to Luanda Province.
To the minister of the Interior, there is a need for the corporation to be more strict with ruthless criminals.
"Against those, and particularly those who do hesitate to take human lives, I reiterate the instruction that we must implacable", he emphasised.
On the other hand, the government official reminded that the rate of roads accidents countrywide have been growing, informing that only this year about 4000 cases were recorded already, a figure that has surpassed last year's data.
He also reminded that in Angola roads accidents are now the second main cause of death after malaria.
Among the factors that have contributed to this negative aspect, he said, it is highlighted the frequent violation of the traffic rules and drink-driving.
Ângelo de Barros Veiga Tavares appealed to the Traffic Police to double efforts in the work of preventing roads accidents.
The Broad Consultative Council of the Interior Ministry, which is schedulked to end this Tuesday, is discussing themes like "The action and development plan of the Interior Ministry for 2012/2017", "The Guidelines of the minister", "The Work Plan for 2013" and "Strategic plan for fighting illegal immigration".
