CITY Cricket Club were at the weekend crowned new kings of the Midlands Cricket Association (MCA) A League T-20 Open championship after beating rivals Metros A by 24 runs in an exciting final played at Metros home turn in Lusaka.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, City reached an impressive score of 126 runs for eight from their 20 allotted overs before sending Metros A out to bat out a mammoth target of 127 runs to win the title.
But helped by imposing bowlers and exquisite fielding, City restricted the otherwise ruthless Metros A's good start to just 102 runs, also with a loss of wicket eight wickets, in all 20 overs to take the 2012 MCA T-20 crown.
And in the B League, Gallants lived up to the meaning of every letter in their name by overcoming all odds to reach the finals of the MCA Play Off after two gruelling encounters that saw them win with the last ball in both skirmishes.
It was team captain Ahmed-Faraz Yousuf who came from the front and delivered the winning runs in both instances to take his team to the finals, but it was 17-year-old Naeen Patel who stole the show with the man-of-the-match performances.
In first Play-Off played on Saturday, at Metros Sports Cub, Gallants needed to overcome the Titans B who after winning the toss and electing to bat first, went on to chalk up 119 runs for seven in 20 overs and looked set to progress to semi-final of the play-off.
But the Gallants put up a brave run-chase making this game one of the best of the season as when needing two runs to win off the last ball and nine wickets down, Yousuf delivered a boundary that sent his team into the semi-final of the Play-Offs.
That was in reference to the second play off they played on Sunday against Emmasdale in which the Gallants were chasing a target of 102 runs to win.
Emmasdale had batted first and scored 101 runs all out in 19.2 overs before going out to bowl and joyfully saw Gallants lose eight wickets and still needed one run to win from the last ball, before Gallants' Yousuf again pulled a trick out of the bag to deliver two runs and take the game.
For making the finals, Gallants will play Metros B in what is expected to be an exciting final this Sunday at Metro Club.
