The Senate yesterday urged the Federal Government to name the Ilorin International Airport after the Late Senator Abubakar Olusola Saraki. This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba on Saraki's demise.

Various senators, in their contributions, extolled the virtues of the deceased, saying he was a man of the people.Deputy Senate Leader Abdul Ningi, Senators Simeon Ajibola, James Manager, Ganiyu Solomon, Danjuma Goje, Shaaba Lafiaji, Olusola Adeyeye, Chris Anyanwu and Smart Adeyemi described the late strongman of Kwara politics as a generous politician who was committed to the cause of the common man.

Earlier, in his lead debate, Ndoma-Egba noted that Saraki's charismatic personality till date defined the office of Senate Leader and gave it character many years after he left the office.

The Senate also resolved to send a delegation, to be led by Ndoma-Egba, to condole with Saraki's family, the government and people of Kwara State.

There are many other ways of honouring whoever the Nigerian government wished to honour, but changing the names of established landmarks should never be on the list. New establishments can be built and named after such VIPs. Constantly changing names of streets, universities, etc is a drawback to effective urban planning and development. Simple services like digital mapping of buildings and GPS service are impossible in nigeria for this mere reason. In advanced countries like Europe, names of streets or airports or universities do not change easily. In Spain, the Gran Via street in the capital of Madrid has borne that same name since the 18th century. All the buildings in that street still bear same numberthey had in year 1820 A.D. But in Nigeria, my street in my village has changed names several times that at times I don't even know what name it is now. The number goes up and down like NEPA light. Please Senators in Nigeria, dedicate more time to enacting laws that help build a better and safe Nigeria. Rip corruption in high places. Rip Boko Haram. Rip your huge salaries to reflect the level of Nigeria as a poor country. It's a shame on you senators, that you receive a pay packet larger than that of Obama of the US, the world super power. May the soul of Saraki rest in peace. But renaming the Ilorin airport to his name makes no sense. There more important things to do for his people...good roads, water, hospital, etc.
